Yes, Bob is (was ?) a nice singer when he would sing it "natural" . Somewhere along the line, he adding these "I wanna be Howling Wolf", mixed with Dylan's Rolling Thunder accents (at their worse ). Was it their tour with Dylan ? Dylan tuned the Beatles on to pot, and Bobby on to wayward singing ?
It is horrifyingly funny that , that early in the game, Garcia was calling it "Looks Like Pain", It had yet to evolve into the "Bad Elvis impersonator" versions we get in the 80's !
Great show , by the way !

No, not Elvis. First listen to this LLR. Don’t worry, it’s a nicely played version and, consequently, relatively painless … except for Bob’s, um, enthusiasm:

Now check this out. All the way through, please:

Hey, I love ‘em both. In their own unique ways.

Yes it is a nice version ( Jerry is great here ! ). I kind of like the spoken part at the end, in the tradition of many country songs ,etc. The rave up at the end is usually where I get a little annoyed ; instead of having just lost the love of his life, he sounds like someone handed him a million bucks ! Now on a pure entertainment level, this can be good, plenty of great performers get carried away ( listen to the end of Ottis Redding's performance of "I've Been Loving You Too Long", from Monterey !, but I think it is too often silly with Bob .
It's a shame that Al Jolsen is most remembered for this "black face" performance from "The Jazz Singer" ( incidentally, isn't Weir's trying to ape Howling Wolf, and using "wimens" instead of women" , sort of "black face" ? alota people want to be "black"). Jerry Lee Lewis, once listed "4 great stylists" : Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, himself ( of course !), and Al Jolsen . At first I was perplexed , "Al Jolsen... Huh ?", but the more I listen, to Jolsen I think it is his "attitude" , and panache as a performer , is what he saw in him . Jolsen came from that pre microphone style of singing , thus his declamatory , reach them in the back of the house, style comes from . His fireball, "can't keep me down" approach probably had its influence on Rock . He is is a great singer whom deserves more appreciation .

Seems to me that maybe Garcia was saying "Looks Like Pain" due to the painful feedback screech seconds before...maybe its just me, maybe I shouldn't try to get inside Garcia's head...

I have been doing a lot of "Bobby Bashing" lately, but I am reminded , with all the billions of hours I listen to the GD, he is the second most listened to singer I have listened to in my life !
